This is SwitchBot’s third-generation lock, and it’s a big leap forward. The Lock Ultra improves on everything from performance and reliability to battery life and installation.
Smarter Battery System
One of the standout features is its triple battery setup:
- A rechargeable battery that lasts up to 12 months
- A CR123A backup battery with up to 5 years of standby life
- A micro-electrolytic emergency battery that gives you a few extra unlocks if all else fails

Compared to its predecessor, the Lock Ultra is:

Quick and Easy Installation
Installation is incredibly straightforward. You don’t need to replace your existing lock or call a professional.
The SwitchBot Lock Ultra is designed to work with almost any existing lock thanks to its 8 different adapters and 2 different mounting plates. Installation took me about an hour, and that included removing my old SwitchBot Lock Pro, installing the new Lock Ultra and Keypad Vision, and shooting some video footage (this latter part was the most time consuming).
Once installed, I added the Lock Ultra to my SwitchBot App and ran through the calibration process, which was remarkably simple. The lock automatically finds its maximum locked position and unlocks itself. After that, it’s ready to use!
SwitchBot Keypad Vision – Unlock Your Door With a Glance
The most futuristic part of the combo is the SwitchBot Keypad Vision, which adds 3D facial recognition as a way to unlock your door.

Setting it up is very similar to adding face or fingerprint unlock on your smartphone. It’s done through the app and takes just a few minutes.
Can you trust the Keypad Vision?
- Works in complete darkness using infrared
- Detects real human faces (not fooled by photos or videos)
- Has an extremely low false match rate (0.0001%)
- Facial data is stored locally on the device for added privacy
If you don’t want to use face unlock, there are plenty of alternatives:
- PIN codes
- Fingerprint sensor
- NFC cards
- Smartwatch
- Smartphone
- Voice control
- Auto-unlock with geofencing
Personally, I still prefer the fingerprint sensor over facial recognition, but that’s mainly because I had to mount my Keypad Vision lower than recommended due to space constraints around my door. This means I have to bend down for face scans, which isn’t ideal. If you can mount it at the correct height, facial recognition should be much more convenient.
Hub Mini – Unlock From Anywhere
The SwitchBot Hub Mini is the bridge that brings it all together. It lets you control your Lock Ultra remotely and integrate it with your smart home.
With the Hub Mini, you can:
- Lock and unlock your door from anywhere
- Use Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri Shortcuts
- Take advantage of Matter and Home Assistant integration
If you already have a compatible SwitchBot Hub, you might not need this one. But it is included in the bundle so everything to work right away.
Things to Keep in Mind
While the overall experience has been great, there are a couple of things to be aware of:
- The Lock Ultra isn’t officially rated for outdoor use. However, I’ve used SwitchBot locks outside before without issue. Just add a plastic cover for protection from rain or snow.
- The auto-unlock (geofencing) feature didn’t work consistently for me. It might still be in development, or it may just need some fine-tuning.
Living in the Future: My Experience After Several Weeks
After using the SwitchBot Lock Ultra Vision Combo for a couple of weeks, I’m genuinely impressed by how seamlessly it integrates into daily life. The lock operates quickly and quietly, and having multiple unlocking options provides incredible convenience.
The auto-calibration feature means I never have to worry about the lock not aligning properly, and the triple battery system gives me peace of mind knowing I won’t get locked out due to power issues.
While the facial recognition works well when mounted at the correct height, I’ve found myself using the fingerprint sensor most often as it’s slightly faster and works regardless of lighting conditions or whether I’m wearing sunglasses.
The ability to remotely lock or unlock my door has been particularly useful when I need to let in a delivery person or friend while I’m away from home. I can also check the lock status from anywhere, so I never have to wonder if I remembered to lock the door when leaving in a hurry.
Integration with Home Assistant has allowed me to create some clever automations, like having my door automatically lock at night or unlock when my phone connects to my home Wi-Fi.
