Imagine waking up to a flooded kitchen with ruined cabinets and a soaked wooden floor. This happened to me recently, and it’s an experience I never want to repeat. Water damage can occur suddenly or slowly, drop by drop, causing costly repairs. Thankfully, there’s an easy way to prevent this mess before it starts. I started to use this battery-powered device called the SwitchBot Water Leak Detector to protect my home from water damage, but let me explain…

What Is the SwitchBot Water Leak Detector?
The SwitchBot Water Leak Detector is a smart device designed to be your first line of defense against unexpected water leaks. It’s equipped with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing it to monitor for leaks 24/7. If it detects water, it will notify you immediately, so you can take action quickly.
This device is particularly useful in areas prone to leaks, such as under sinks, near washing machines, around water heaters, and in basements.
Why You Need a Water Leak Detector
Water damage is a common issue that many homeowners face. It can result from a variety of sources, including broken pipes, faulty appliances, or even severe weather conditions. The damage caused by water can be extensive, affecting not only your home’s structure but also your personal belongings. Repairing water damage can be expensive and time-consuming, not to mention the inconvenience of having parts of your home out of commission while repairs are made.
How the SwitchBot Water Leak Detector Works
The SwitchBot Water Leak Detector is designed to detect water in three ways: drip detection, immersion detection, and water level detection. It has four sensor probes—two on top for detecting drips and two on the bottom for detecting water levels as low as 0.5mm. This means it can alert you to water dripping from pipes, floor immersion, and any contact with water.
The device is built with an IP67 waterproof coating, ensuring durability even in wet conditions. It has an impressive battery life of 18 to 24 months, and when the batteries run out, you can easily replace them with two standard AAA batteries.

Easy Setup in Just 3 Steps
Setting up the Water Leak Detector in your home is simple and can be done in just three steps:
- Insert the Batteries: The device uses two AAA batteries, which are included in the package.
- Pair with the SwitchBot App: This step is optional, but pairing the sensor with the SwitchBot Mobile App will enable push notifications and emails. Otherwise, you’ll still have alarm sounds.
- Place the Detector: Position the detector near potential leak sources like under sinks, near washing machines, around water heaters, and in basements.
Four Ways to Get Alerts
The SwitchBot Water Leak Detector has four alarm methods:
- Alarm Sound: At home, you’ll hear a loud alarm (up to 100dB). You can mute or lower this sound using the SwitchBot App.
- Push Notifications: Receive alerts on your phone.
- Emails: Get email notifications about leaks.
- Smart Home Integration: With a SwitchBot Hub 2 or Hub Mini, you can enable cloud services to integrate with Alexa, Google, Siri Shortcuts, IFTTT, and SmartThings.
Advanced Smart Home Integration
For those who are tech-savvy and have a smart home setup, the SwitchBot Water Leak Detector integrates seamlessly with various smart home platforms. By connecting it to a SwitchBot Hub 2 or Hub Mini, you can enable cloud services that allow you to control and monitor the device through Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri Shortcuts, IFTTT, and SmartThings. This integration means you can receive voice alerts or even set up automation to take action when a leak is detected, such as turning off a connected water valve to stop the leak.
Home Assistant Integration
Unfortunately, Home Assistant is not in the supported list yet, but I believe this will be fixed soon. Because SwitchBot is currently having a local Home Assistant bluetooth integration that works great for a lot of their products and another SwitchBot Cloud integration that allows you to control SwitchBot devices connected through the SwitchBot hub. So I expect the Water Leak Detector to appear in of those integrations rather sooner than later.
Also, Matter Standard support is expected to be added later this year for the SwitchBot Water Leak Detector so this will unlock the Home Assistant Integration for sure.
