How I Used to “Forecast” My Solar Energy 😅
For the longest time, my solar forecasting strategy was basically this: open a weather app, look at the clouds, and think — “Yeah, should be a decent day for the panels. Probably.”
That was it. That was the whole system.
Sunny sky? Good day. Clouds? Bad day. No numbers, no real data, just vibes. And the truth is — that approach is pretty terrible. The weather tells you about temperature and UV and rain. It doesn’t tell you how many kilowatt-hours YOUR specific panels will actually produce today.
I have three groups of panels on my roof — East, West, and South. Different angles, different directions. A sunny day doesn’t mean the same thing for all of them. And I was treating them all the same because I simply didn’t have better data.
Then I found the Home Assistant Forecast.Solar integration — and everything clicked.
What Changed (Without Giving Everything Away) ☀️
I don’t want to spoil the full setup here because I’m showing the entire build live tomorrow — but here’s the basic idea:
Forecast.Solar is a free service that calculates real solar production forecasts based on YOUR actual panel setup — your location, roof angle, panel direction, and total watt peak. It’s not a weather guess. It’s actual math based on your hardware.
Home Assistant has an official integration for it. Once connected, you get sensors with real data — how much energy you’ll produce today, tomorrow, what time will be peak production, and more.
Now here’s the fun part: I connected all of that data to an AI running locally through Home Assistant, and the AI writes me a short summary every morning. Something like:
“Looks like a solid solar day! You should get around 35 kWh total. Peak production will be around 1 PM — great time to charge the car or run heavy appliances.”
No dashboards to check. No numbers to interpret. Just a simple notification that actually tells me something useful — every single morning, automatically.
It’s the kind of automation that makes you think: “Why wasn’t I doing this the whole time?”
